fenshot browser extension privacy policy

Last updated: September 10, 2026

The short version

The extension collects nothing, stores nothing, and sends nothing anywhere. Everything happens on your device.

What the extension does

When you click the fenshot icon, the browser takes a screenshot of the visible tab (using the activeTab permission, which is granted only by your click). A neural network bundled inside the extension reads the chess position from that screenshot, on your device. The screenshot and the position never leave your browser.

On the same click, the extension also reads the visible text of that tab (using the scripting permission together with activeTab) and looks for a chess game written as a move list, such as on chessgames.com or in an article. The text is processed on your device and discarded when the popup closes. Nothing is injected into the page permanently and nothing on the page is modified. The extension has no access to any tab you did not click on.

What we collect

Nothing. No analytics, no telemetry, no cookies, no accounts, no identifiers. The extension makes no network requests of its own.

External links

The result screen offers buttons that open lichess.org or kibitzo.com in a new tab with the recognized position or game in the URL. That happens only when you click those buttons, and from that point the respective site's own privacy policy applies.

Links to kibitzo.com carry a static tag (utm_source=fenshot&utm_medium=extension) so that Coachess can count visits arriving from the extension. The tag is the same for every user and contains no identifier and no information about you or the page you were on.

Open source

The complete source code, including the recognition model and this extension, is public at github.com/scoriiu/fenshot (MIT). You can verify every claim above by reading it.
