Chess board to FEN in one click, on any page

See a chess position anywhere, on Lichess, chess.com, a YouTube video, a book PDF or a blog post, and want to analyze it? Click the fenshot icon. The extension captures the visible tab, reads the board with a neural network that runs inside your browser, and shows you the position. From there you can analyze it on Coachess, open it on Lichess, or copy the FEN to use anywhere.

Whole games, not just positions

In the popup, next to the position it read, there is a second card: the game. It appears whenever the page shows a move list. One click on Analyze on Coachess there sends the whole game, not just the position, so the coach can review every move.

On a page that shows a game as a move list, such as chessgames.com, Lichess, a chess.com article or a blog, fenshot finds it, checks that every move is legal, and shows it on a small board you can step through. One click opens the full game on Coachess or Lichess, or copies the PGN. Several games on one page? Page through them.

Private by design

Works with

Lichess and chess.com in their common themes, book diagrams, and most piece sets. When a position is hard to read, fenshot says so instead of pretending, and routes you to an editor to fix the squares.

Common questions

Is the extension free?

Yes. fenshot is free and open source under the MIT license. There is no account, no quota and nothing to upgrade.

Does it upload my screen?

No. It reads the visible tab only when you click the icon, and the recognition runs entirely on your device. The extension makes no network requests and collects no data.

Which browsers does it support?

Chrome, Firefox and Edge on desktop. On a phone, the web version at fenshot.com does the same job without an install.

Can it import a whole game, not just a position?

Yes. On a page that shows a game as a move list, such as chessgames.com, Lichess, a chess.com article or a blog, fenshot finds it, checks that every move is legal, and lets you step through it or open it on Coachess or Lichess.

What happens when it cannot read a board?

It says so instead of guessing, and sends you to an editor where you can fix the squares before analyzing.

No install?
